Today, I have the pleasure of letting you get to know one of our favorite vendors! Meet John Kerfoot from
Tri-Foot Productions, the guru of all things video. You can see some of their fabulous wedding videos
here. We love John. He has such an amazing eye and creates such a beautiful and intimate moving portrait of each and every one of his clients.
{BW} What made you decide to start your own videography business?
{JK} Well, I majored in Film at Wayne State University and was doing Industrial Videos when my cousin asked me if I’d shoot her wedding. I did, and she loved the video and told me I should consider going into business. I didn’t really take it that seriously. Then a friend of a friend asked me if I’d shoot hers – same kind of response, that I should go into business. Well, I never liked the 9-5 routine, and when I decided to return to Wayne State to earn my Masters Degree, being a Videographer was a perfect flexible gig while I was a student again. A couple years later when I finished my degree, the word of mouth on me had spread amongst brides that it was a full-time gig. Though I’ve had chances and offers, I don’t think I could return to a 9-to-5 job. I love being my own boss, I love what I do, I love that each new week it’s a new wedding, and I can create something new, and I love weddings to - everybody is in a great mood and having a good time. I like my job! haha.
{BW} What is your favorite moment of a wedding shoot?
{JK} I think my favorite moment is when the Bride & Groom have their first dance. A lot of the pressure of the day seems to be gone – no more worries about tripping down the aisle, remembering vows, giving a speech…nobody is hungry or in need of a cocktail. Everybody is pretty settled, and the Bride & Groom really have a moment (albeit not super private) to themselves, to gaze at each other and the love that emanates from that moment comes through in the video, ultimately.
{BW} What do you think it takes to be successful in your business?
{JK} I think taking pride in your work is what will make one successful in this business. When you have your own business, everything falls on you – the good and the bad. I take a lot of pride in my work, and there is a fear of not treating each wedding as a new creative venture – which I need to do to not be in a formulaic rut, as that would be dull for both the Client and myself. So that pride in the work also forces one to stay current, to always be looking to learn more and do new cool things, and ultimately impress the couple.
{BW} What are your top 3 favorite blogs/websites?
{JK} Well, I’m a guy so
espn.com is up there! But wedding related, I have to go with theknot, which I suppose makes me a “lurker”. “Lurking” refers to vendors who check out the message boards of brides to see what brides are saying, and ”lurking” almost has a negative connotation, but I believe it’s good to care what brides are saying: their concerns, their fears, what they say about me and my work, about competitors, what they like and dislike, etc.
{BW} Where do you find your inspiration?
{JK} I teach a Video Editing class at Wayne State, which forces me to stay current and look for new ideas and tricks all the time. But ultimately, Movies and TV and music videos and such. A lot of time, movies (I was a film major). While music can drive the video and how it will move and flow, sometimes I will ask the couple what their favorite movies are because it can sometimes stir some creative ideas in direct and sometimes indirect ways. Strangely enough, I once was inspired by the movie Indecent Proposal with a wedding video, and the bride wanted to know what the music was because she loved it so much!
{BW} Outside of Videography, what are your hobbies - What do you love to do?
{JK} Relax with friends and family. Go to sporting events (Tigers games!), concerts, movies, or just sit out by the pool and get some sun and read a book. Outside of school and work, I’m not the typical film nerd I guess! haha
{BW} Name one thing that you use daily that you can’t live without:
{JK} My computer. Checking emails, editing videos. I need the computer to function! The thought of my computer burning out randomly one day and losing work and information scares me to (near) death! (However, put me on a beach in Cancun with a Corona and I’d get over it.
Thanks John!
